Bairbre de Brún MEP in Derry to launch community projects
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún is in Derry City today to officially launch two learning schemes through Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership. Ms de Brún said that the projects were "shining examples of what can be achieved by both community enterprise and support from the EU through PEACE funding".
Ms de Brún will launch the projects designed to enhance skills learning in the local community, increase empowerment and self confidence and make use of information technology as well as offering opportunities for wider community links, including cross-community links.
Speaking today Ms de Brún said:
"I am very pleased to have been invited to formally launch two community projects in the heart of Creggan, in Derry City. I want to pay tribute to organisations such as Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership who are doing sterling work to address the needs of the local community. Creggan is an area with high levels of social need which has been neglected by various statutory agencies over the years.
"However, local communities have always worked hard to address and overcome these disparities. Creggan Neighbourhood Partnership can be very proud of its commitment and service to the local community.
"Learning schemes such as the ones which will be launched this afternoon are shining examples of what can be achieved by both community enterprise and support from the EU through PEACE funding. Sinn Féin has lobbied hard both at home and in the European Parliament to ensure the continuation of a PEACE funding programme. I am pleased to say that a further 200 million euros has been earmarked for 2007 - 2013 quite apart from the amount that the British and Irish governments will put into the programme." ENDS
