Dublin City Councillors to recommend Clontarf Woman Deirdre Clancy and her fellow "Pitstop Ploughshares" the Freedom of the City.

27 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Councillors Killian Forde and Daithi Doolan have stated that he will be recommending to Dublin City Mayor Vincent Jackson,  that Clontarf native Deirdre Clancy and her four fellow “Pitstop Ploughshares”, acquitted on charges of damaging a US warplane at Shannon, be awarded the Freedom of Dublin.

Councillor Forde stated that “This Government has consistently and deliberately ignored the will of the Irish people, they ignored the hundreds of thousands who marched against the war in 2003, they ignored countless calls for the end of logistical support to the US military at Shannon, they ignored evidence of supporting rendition flights from the Council of Europe and they have ignored demands for inspections of flights to check cargos.”

Forde pointed out that “The outside world may be confused that Irish people support this war on Iraq, we don’t, and by honouring Deirdre and her fellow “Pitstop Ploughshares” with the Freedom of the City, we send an important message that we, the citizens of Dublin, reject the Governments role in supporting the US Military.”

Councillor Doolan feels that “Deirdre Clancy is a brave, gusty, committed and selfless activist who for no personal gain whatsoever volunteered her time and put her liberty and life at risk for a noble belief. I can think on no more deserving recipient of the Freedom of The City.”

They stated that “We am confident that the similar minded left wing councillors, including the current Mayor, who make up majority of the 52 strong Council will support this initiative and jointly sponsor it.” ENDS
