Ferris describes Greencore as highwaymen as they attempt to extort even more money from Irish taxpayers

28 July, 2006

Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has described Greencore as highwaymen following their decision to go to the courts to attempt to extort even more money from Irish taxpayers. He said Greencore's behaviour is galling when you consider that they have already been promised compensation to the tune of €98 million while 3,700 growers received only a fraction of this amount and former workers in Mallow are still fighting for redundancy payments.

Deputy Ferris said, "The decision of Greencore to go to the courts to try and squeeze more compensation from the government is galling.

"Greencore have already been allocated €98million from the government while 3,700 growers only received a fraction of this amount and former workers at the Mallow plant are still fighting to get their redundancy payments. To cap it all Greencore are sitting on land worth hundreds of millions which they are obviously going to liquidate in the very near future.

"It is a nonsense to listen to talk of restructuring. The fact is that the Irish sugar industry has been wiped out at the stroke of a pen. This should not have happened and is something that can still be reversed." ENDS
