Ferris backs Cork ESB protestors

1 August, 2006

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD, has voiced his support for the three Cork people who were yesterday served with a High Court injunction preventing them from impeding the erection of overhead power lines on their property. The ESB is seeking to install the power lines in order to connect to a nearby wind farm at Glanta Commons. The Dromourneen residents claim that over head power lines will present a threat to those living on the land, and have called on the ESB to install the lines underground.

Deputy Ferris said: "I fully support the demand of the Dromourneen landowners that the power lines across their property be installed under ground. I believe that this is a reasonable request and one that ought to be facilitated in order to protect the health and safety of the residents and to allow the project to proceed. As the Rossport situation illustrates, court injunctions are not the best way to resolve such matters and I would call on the ESB to withdraw the injunctions in order to allow the people concerned to present their case."
