Concerns expressed after Apprentice Boys file for Castlederg parades
Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone Pat Doherty today expressed his concerns after the Apprentice Boys filed for two parades in Castlederg on 12th August, both seeking to march through the nationalist end of the town.
Mr Doherty said:
"So far this summer we have witnessed the marching season passing off relatively peacefully. This has come about through the efforts of a wide range of people including Sinn Féin activists, community leaders and churchmen.
"I have to say that the decision of the Apprentice Boys to file for two parades along contentious routes in Castlederg on 13th August, both before leaving for the main parade in Derry, and on their return again to Castlederg flies in the face of these efforts
"The Apprentice Boys are deliberately raising tensions at a time when the wider community in Castlederg and elsewhere is clearly working to see the summer months pass off without serious incident. This is a reckless decision and I would appeal to the Parades Commission to ensure that these parades are restricted to unionist areas of Castlederg." ENDS
