Heavy handed PSNI operation in Bellaghy criticised

2 August, 2006

Sinn Féin Assembly member for Mid-Ulster Geraldine Dougan has hit out at the heavy handed tactics adopted by the PSNI this morning in Bellaghy during raids on two local homes.

Ms Dougan said;

"The PSNI arrived in the early hours of this morning at the homes of two local men in the Bellaghy area. The two men were arrested and taken from the scene. The PSNI have remained at the two homes carrying out a search operation. This remains ongoing.

"Women and children remain in both houses and the PSNI have refused access to myself and other local representatives. They are refusing to allow the woman and children to leave the houses. The attitude of the PSNI on the ground is reminiscent of the worst excesses of their disgraced predecessors in the RUC. I have contacted the Police Ombudsman's office to complain about the heavy handed conduct of this operation." ENDS
