Willie Frazer's views rejected by the people

3 August, 2006

Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy said today that the result in the Fews by-election showed clearly that self appointed victims campaigner Willie Frazer represented nobody and had no mandate and challenged those in the media who have allowed Frazer to promote himself to recognise this reality.

Mr Murphy said:

"Firstly I would like to thank the nationalist and republican people in South Armagh who have once again put their faith and confidence in Sinn Féin and our united Ireland analysis. I would also like to thank the party organisation who once again have delivered a massive result for our party in this election.

"The reality of this poll is that Willie Frazer and his views have been soundly rejected and indeed the low turnout in unionist areas show clearly that many within that community failed to offer Frazer any support or cover.

"The media now need to recognise the fact that Willie Frazer has no mandate to speak on behalf of people in South Armagh. He has no mandate to speak on behalf of victims. He is self appointed and has unfortunately been given airtime time and again, denied to elected representatives, to promote his narrow political agenda. Frazer has now put his views to the people of South Armagh and had them rejected, now let those who have promoted him for years acknowledge that fact." ENDS
