New opportunity to reduce housing waiting list welcomed by Sinn Féin
Dublin South West Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe and Dublin Mid-West Sinn Féin election candidate Joanne Spain have welcomed the announcement by the Government of the designation of land at Balgaddy/Clonburris as a strategic development zone.
Deputy Crowe said, "There is reportedly potential here for the construction of up to 8,000 new houses. This is a new opportunity to reduce the local housing waiting list consisting of 8,000 men, women and children in the surrounding areas including Lucan, Clondalkin and Palmerstown.
"To ensure that mistakes of the past are not replicated, there must be a stipulation that necessary infrastructure is included in this development. Education facilities must be adequate for the area and should include buildings for pre-schools, creches, schools and further education facilities.
"Our under-funded and congested public transport system is already stretched in the surrounding area to this new development. It is imperative that efficient transport links are included in this plan to serve the travelling needs of this new community. Commuting for people should not be a burden.
Joanne Spain said, "This land was zoned residential in 1972. The fact that it has taken 34 years to progress this plan, while approximately 44,000 people are on the housing waiting list, is a disgrace.
"The plan must be modelled on Adamstown and be completed on a phased basis. Part V of the Planning and Development Act which requires any new development to produce a certain percentage of social and affordable housing must be implemented, instead of allowing property developers to buy their way out of this obligation with cash or land."
