Sinn Féin to hold Protest at Midwestern Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle
Sinn Féin General election candidate for Limerick East Maurice Quinlivan has confirmed that the party will be holding a protest at the Midwestern Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle on Wednesday 9th August opposing the give away of public land at the Hospital to private developers.
Quinlivan continued "In May of this year we launched our health policy 'Healthcare in an Ireland of Equals'. As we said in May our campaign will be ongoing. We remain steadfastly opposed to the developing two-tier health system so keenly pursued by the present government. Poorer people die earlier in this country and this must not be allowed to continue. We will be protesting outside the Midwestern Regional Hospital on 9th August as part of our campaign against the give away of public land to private developers. These proposals will increase inequality in access to healthcare, damage the public healthcare system, reduce its income and will involve the waste and give away of millions of euro of public property. As I have also suggested in the past if there is excess space in the grounds of the Midwestern Regional Hospital why isn't it used for Public Nursing Home Spaces which could also be used as a step down facility which would lead to the freeing up of much needed hospitals beds in the public system?
He concluded: "We don't need to give taxpayers money to private consortiums to develop private profit making hospitals. We need proper investment that will help to improve the health of all the people of Limerick. Sinn Féin is calling for a publicly-funded healthcare system, where the best value for money can always be delivered." Ends
