Sinn Féin MP comments after Attrachta Harron killer is sentenced
Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty speaking after the whole life sentence handed down to Trevor Hamilton and the announcement that Kit Chivers will head a Review of the Management of Sex Offenders has said lessons must be learnt from the failure to protect Attracta Harron.
Mr Doherty said:
"This was a horrific crime that shocked the local community.
"While no sentence can heal the pain being felt by the Harron family I hope that the sentence handed down today provides some comfort to them.
"Trevor Hamilton has a record of serious sexual crimes that demanded rigorous monitoring and management. It is clear that not enough was done to protect the community from him and it clear that there must be changes in the way that sexual offenders are managed both within the prisons and following their release.
"For that reason it is vital that the independent serious case review carried out into the management of Trevor Hamilton leads to long-term improvements.
"While I welcome the announcement that there will now be a Review of the Management of Sex Offenders it is essential that the review learns the lessons from the failure to protect the life of Attracta Harron." ENDS
