Mary Lou McDonald welcomes lifting of restrictions on free travel scheme for elderly

Sinn Féin National Chairperson and MEP for Dublin Mary Lou McDonald has this afternoon welcomed the lifting of restrictions on the "free travel scheme" for the elderly and people with disabilities during peak time travel.

Previous restrictions meant that approximately 600,000 pass holders could not use certain bus services for free during peak times.

Speaking today Ms McDonald said:

"I am delighted to learn that the Government has decided to lift its restrictions on the use of public transport during peak times for both the elderly and people with disabilities.

"For over 40 years such restrictions were enforced and it made no sense to issue people with travel pass cards and then tell them that they could not use them at peak times. It is quite astounding that such restrictions have been in place for such a lengthy period of time and I want to take this opportunity to welcome such a long overdue measure.

"I hope that this is the first in a series of Governmental initiatives designed to target provisions for both the elderly and people with disabilities who continue to face considerable barriers within Irish society." ENDS
