BELB Chief Executive to meet over axing of Children's services in West Belfast

10 August, 2006

Sinn Fein Education Spokesperson will meet with the BELB Chief Executive David Cargo on Thursday morning at 10am to discuss the controversial close of the School Age Mothers Project at the Whiterock Children’s Centre.   Michael Ferguson will be joined by Deirdre Walsh the Director of the Children’s Centre at the meeting and commenting on the forthcoming meeting said,   “ The Department of Education allocate £50k for the service to be delivered to both West and South Belfast and it has now become apparent that a member of the Board staff without any consultation decided to close the service at Whiterock and just quietly funnel the money into another scheme at Loughshore.”   “ I will be making the Chief Executive aware that we like everyone else on the Board elected and no elected have a statutory entitlement to be made a ware of any such cuts to services. We would especially expect to be consulted about a service that involved the Children’s Centre but the RVH, Bernardos and the Social Services, a partnership that has delivered a comprehensive care package to vulnerable school age mother, many of whom have already fallen through the school system.”   “ We will have one message and that is that we will not allow anyone to take resources from such an excellent project by stealth and funnel it off to some other centre that does not meet the needs of children and young people in areas of high social need.”ENDS
