Voluntary Sector should not be left to take over State's role in housing - Crowe

11 August, 2006

Speaking today Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe welcomed the voluntary housing grant but criticised the government for shifting the responsibility of providing housing to voluntary housing organisations.

He said, "While I would welcome the announcement of the €1.6 million voluntary housing grant by the government, this will only be for administrative purposes.

"Though the voluntary housing sector has a role to play in increasing the State's social housing programme by helping meet the needs of those on local authority waiting lists, the voluntary sector should not be left to take over the role as the primary provider of housing for individuals and family units. The government are increasingly abdicating their responsibility in this regard and it is unacceptable.

"The government have failed miserably in reaching their social housing target and under the new social partnership agreement are likely to fall well short of the number of housing required for the next three years." Críoch
