Luas extension pointless without adequate tram space - Crowe

14 August, 2006

Speaking today Sinn Féin's Transport spokesperson Seán Crowe welcomed the go ahead for the extension of the Luas Green Line from Sandyford to Cherrywood in south Dublin.

The Dublin South-West TD said "While I welcome this green light for the Luas to be extended, it is vital that bus services around Sandyford, Ballyogan and Cherrywood are not scaled back further, just as the 48A was in Dundrum and several buses in my own constituency. Buses should be utilised to complement the Luas instead of merely being replaced by it.

"There is already a problem with overcrowding on the Luas, which is packed to capacity at peak times. A further extension in the line will inevitably result in more passengers. It is for this reason that we need longer trams. If this is not included in any plan then the Luas line extension will be of no real long term benefit if the tram becomes full by the time they reach Sandyford." Críoch
