Tallaght Children's Hospital must remain open - Crowe

15 August, 2006

Sinn Féin's Seán Crowe has reiterated his determination to do all he can to ensure the National Children's Hospital in Tallaght remains open in the event of the new hospital being built at the Mater. He was speaking after a comparison of journey times from Tallaght Hospital to the Mater showed variations of just under an hour to over an hour and a half depending on mode of transport

The Dublin South-West TD said: "There is no reason why Tallaght Hospital needs to be downgraded and the Children's Hospital shut down if the new hospital is to go ahead at the Mater. It will strip the southside of access to basic children's medical facilities. The 67,221 patients seen at the National Children's Hospital in Tallaght last year will be forced to trek into the City Centre. They will be joined by the thousands of other patients from Crumlin Hospital.

"Our experiment today was designed to give people an idea of the time it will take parents with sick children to travel across the city. The shortest time, by car, was still just under an hour from Tallaght Hospital to the Mater. For those relying on public transport it is about half an hour extra travel time. This is a completely unnecessary hardship to inflict on children who may be sick and in pain.

"It should be borne in mind that the three of us left from Tallaght Hospital. The Hospital, and the Square next to it, is a major transport hub for south Dublin. Many people would have to take a bus to the Square before even beginning the trip to the City Centre. Sinn Féin is determined to continue working with local residents and campaigners to ensure the efforts by Fianna Fáil and the PDs to shut down the National Children's Hospital are successfully resisted."
