Mary Lou McDonald to announce details of major EU Conference in Dublin and to launch EU website

23 August, 2006

Sinn Féin National Chairperson Mary Lou McDonald MEP will tomorrow morning, Thursday August 24th, announce details of a forthcoming major EU Conference in Dublin and also will launch Sinn Féin's new tri-lingual European Union website at the European Parliament Office Molesworth Street in Dublin at 10AM.

Ms McDonald will be joined by party colleagues Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD and Dublin Councillor Larry O'Toole to announce details of a major one day European conference on September 9th entitled 'Another Europe Is Possible' organized by the European United Left/Nordic Green Left group in the European Parliament.

Speaking today Ms McDonald said:

"Tomorrow's press conference has been called jointly to announce details of a forthcoming major EU Conference in Dublin and to launch our new tri-lingual European Union website. The conference on September 9th will be held at Liberty Hall and bring together MEPs, trade union representatives, NGO's and the European Commission representation in Ireland to discuss the notion that 'Another Europe Is Possible'.

"Conference topics will include the promotion of workers‚ rights in the EU and the future of 'Social Europe' at a time when many people believe these twin premises are under serious threat.

Speaking with regards to the website launch Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

"Sinn Féin has always been to the forefront in making use of technology as both education and resource tools. Tomorrow's launch of our tri-lingual European Union website is about providing our constituents with information on our policies, latest news, video footage and podcasts from our two MEPs. In addition, the website can contribute to the continuing debate regarding the EU's fundamental democratic and communication deficit.

"I am pleased to announce that the website can be accessed and navigated by English, Irish and French speakers. Sinn Féin's commitment to the Irish language and its continued development will ensure that the website will be fully bi-lingual. Given that Irish will become a full and working language of the European Union in January 2007 it is important to demonstrate our support for this important initiative in a practical way." ENDS
