1000's of families miss out in Back to School Payments

23 August, 2006

Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has today revealed, "that thousands of eligible families are not availing of the Back To School Expenses Scheme."

Speaking this morning, Cllr. Doolan said:

"I would strongly urge families to apply for the Bask To School Expenses Scheme. The government have set aside €26m for the scheme but it is an unfortunate reality but families still miss out on claiming what is rightfully theirs. While 157,000 children were able to benefit from the scheme last year I am concerned that tens of thousands of families will still miss out on their payments this year."

Cllr. Doolan explains, „Many families simply miss out because they do not make the application to for this funding. The payment, which is income related, entitles a family to €120 for each eligible child between the ages of 2 & 11. A family will receive €190 for each child between 12 & 22. Parents apply through their local HSE Office and funding is open until the end of September. The government know only too well that families are missing out in their entitlements. The Minister has a responsibility to ensure these families receive their payments."

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan, demanded the Minister for Social Affairs, Seamus Brennan, „to have a targeted advertising campaign on radio, television and leaflets to ensure those who are entitled to this money receive this money." ENDS
