Crowe welcomes funding for Childhood Development Initiative
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Social and Family Affairs Seán Crowe TD has welcomed the belated decision to provide the funding announced today for the Childhood Development Initiative and the other community based projects in Dublin.
Speaking today the Dublin South West TD said, "Sinn Fein welcomes the belated decision to provide the funding announced today for the Childhood Development Initiative and the other community based projects in Dublin. The West Tallaght initiative designed by the work of those actually on the ground tackling poverty and empowering communities will make a significant positive difference to the lives of children in the area.
"We must ask though why it took so long. The How are our Kids study was published in 2004, Bertie Ahern came to Tallaght in October 2005 nearly a year a go to launch the initiative yet it eleven months have passed since then. Such delays are not acceptable and show that tackling poverty is not a government priority.
"Today's CORI annual socio-economic review highlights the depth of inequality and poverty in Ireland today. We agree with CORI that Ireland is failing it citizens, and however welcome today's announcement on the delayed CDI funding is, we need an investment of hundreds of millions of Euro in our communities on the ground, in their housing, health services and schooling to build the neighbourhoods of a fair Ireland."
