SDLP again jump into wendy house Assembly with DUP

30 August, 2006

Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy today said that it was unfortunate that the SDLP had retreated back onto the ground of wendy house Assembly debates along with the DUP.

Mr Murphy said:

"Yesterday as the report from the economic sub group returned to the main Preparation for Government Committee the SDLP once again retreated onto the DUP ground of seeking to have wendy house debates on the floor of the suspended Assembly.

"The weeks before the summer recess displayed for all the meaningless and pointless nature of these exercises. The British government predictably ignored every decision taken in the talking shop. Most nationalists would have presumed that given this experience the SDLP would be a little more reticent about getting involved once again in the DUP pet project of an Assembly without power.

"Yet yesterday in the Preparation for Government Committee the SDLP once again jumped onto the DUP ground and lined up with the Paisley party in demanding that the report of the sub group be put before the Hain Assembly for what will once again be little more than a meaningless debate in front of an institution with no power."
