Taoiseach must stand up to PDs privatisation agenda - Crowe

1 September, 2006

Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Seán Crowe has welcomed the latest commitment from the Taoiseach that the 200 buses promised for Dublin Bus are to come on stream. Deputy Crowe said if the Taoiseach goes around claiming to be an ordinary down to earth Dubliner he should know the needs of the Dublin people.

Speaking after attending the Dublin Bus Community Awards today Deputy Crowe said, "Whether the Taoiseach admits it or not, the dispute between the PDs and Fianna Fáil is the reason the 200 buses promised for Dublin Bus have been delayed. While I welcome his commitment today to bring these buses on stream even at this late stage most Dublin people will want to see the buses operating in their own areas before the believe what they are hearing.

"The Taoiseach prides himself on being an ordinary down to earth Dubliner. If this is the case then he should know that these buses are urgently required by his fellow Dubliners. The people of his own constituency are among the thousands of ordinary Dubliners waiting for these buses to come on stream.

"It is about time Bertie Ahern and his Fianna Fáil colleagues in Government grew a backbone and stood up to the privatisation agenda of their junior partners. I sometimes think that they forget that they are the senior partners in this Government." ENDS
