Sinn Féin have been urging Water Service to tackle hydrant problem for years

12 September, 2006

Commenting after the Water Service issued figures detailing the vast amounts of both money and water being wasted due to children breaching fire hydrants during the summer months, North Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Margaret McClenaghan said:

"Over the course of the past three years I have both written to and met with the Water Service to discuss the problem of children breaching fire hydrants each summer. Today the Water Service issued figures detailing the vast amounts of both money and water being wasted due to this practice.

"I have been trying unsuccessfully to get the Water Service and the Emergency Services to sit down together and come up with some sort of locking device which can be placed onto the hydrants. The only people who need access to these hydrants are the Water Service and the Emergency Services. Surely it is not a massive operation to come up with a mechanism to secure these hydrants and allow only safe access for those who need to use the hydrants." ENDS
