Anger at publication of School League Tables

13 September, 2006

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson, West Belfast MLA Michael Ferguson has said that the publication of School Performance tables was a mistake that undermines the efforts and progress of schools operating in socio-economically deprived areas.

Mr Ferguson said:

"Martin McGuinness took the decision to scrap the School Performance Tables on the grounds that they were both misleading and unfair.

"Fundamentally such tables ignore the socio-economic deprivation that schools are operating and undermine the progress that schools are making. The publication of these tables is a serious mistake that also undermines the demand to deliver equality of access and entitlement for all our young people.

"The publication of this information also demonstrates the political interference that is being exerted on and within the department in favour of the grammar school lobby. It reinforces the arguments in favour of the need for a local minister, that can act fairly and deliver a real budget to support education reform, that is being held to ransom by the DUP." ENDS
