Sinn Féin welcome changes to public funded fertility treatment

18 September, 2006

Sinn Féin Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew has said that the announcement of changes to the rules governing publicly funded fertility treatment is both long overdue and reflects the changing nature of society.

Ms Gildernew said:

"This news means that couples will be able to access fertility treatment sooner and that women who are trying to conceive later in life will not be discriminated against. It will remove some of the serious financial barriers that couples with fertility problems also have to confront.

"This move is long overdue. It reflects the changing nature of our society and in particular the greater participation of women in the workplace. Supporting equality in the workplace for women means not just that we challenge the barriers they face at work, challenges for promotion and equal pay, it means that we provide support for women who want to start a family later in life."
