Judiciary in the north are 'unashamedly biased' - Gildernew

7 August, 2003

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has claimed that the judiciary in the north are 'unashamedly biased'. Ms Gildernew's remarks came after the latest loyalist gang to appear before the courts here was granted bail.

Ms Gildernew said:

"This morning a loyalist gang caught with £2.5 million worth of drugs appeared in court. As has now become standard practice for loyalists they were all granted bail by the judge.

"Contrast this with the continuing internment without prospect of trial of North Belfast man John O'Hagan. John O'Hagan has now been held for 17 months on document charges. He has received no trial date and has been repeatedly refused bail. The reason for this is simple. John O'Hagan is a republican.

"The judiciary in the north are discredited, sectarian and unashamedly biased. The treatment of John O'Hagan when contrasted with the cases of various unionist paramilitaries is a clear example of that." ENDS
