Greencore using bully-boy tactics
Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Martin Ferris has condemned Greencore management for using what he described as bully boy tactics in the dispute with workers at the Mallow sugar plant. Deputy Ferris was speaking today after management at Greencore threatened to withdraw bonus payments from any workers taking part in pickets at the north Cork plant.
He said, "Workers at the Mallow sugar plant are rightly entitled to protest over the meagre redundancy packages on offer from Greencore management. For Greencore to resort to this type of bully boy tactics is nothing short of disgraceful. It reflects the brazen attitude of this company who have already asset stripped and closed down a successful public enterprise built up over several generations.
"The Government must use its golden share in the company to force Greencore management to honour its commitment to workers to pay above the statutory redundancy package if forced redundancy was required.
"I have also requested the Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlin to hold a public enquiry on the possibility of using the former sugar factories to process sugar beet for bio ethanol." ENDS
