Ferris slates Minister's response to unemployment rates in Tralee
North Kerry Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris has criticised Minister Micheál Martin's response to unemployment figures in Tralee. In response to a Dáil question put by Deputy Ferris, the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment stated that unemployment figures for the entire South West region were at 3.7% while the national rate was 4.3%. However, Deputy Ferris said that the Minister was ignoring the fact that the unemployment rate for Tralee was nearly three times that of the national average.
Deputy Ferris said, "The Minister's use of unemployment figures that cover the entire South West region when replying to a question specifically about unemployment in Tralee is evasive in the extreme. While he has acknowledged that Live Register figures have increased from 3,048 to 3,219 in 12 months, he has ignored the fact that Tralee has an unemployment rate almost three times that of the national average.
"Tralee has suffered a number of large scale job losses this year, yet we have seen nothing in terms of replacement industry in the town. Both Tralee and North Kerry have a lot to offer to potential investors. We have a highly skilled work force and Institute of Technology, a first class business park and a regional airport, yet it seems that we are not a priority for the IDA or this government." ENDS
