Taoiseach's attitude to health workers disgraceful - Ó Caoláin

11 October, 2006

Sinn Féin Dáil leader and spokesperson on Health and Children Caoimhghín Ó Caolain has described as "disgraceful" the comments of the Taoiseach who accused healthcare workers of working only six hours a day and knocking off at lunchtime on Friday.

Deputy Ó Caoláin said, "For the Taoiseach to make such a crass and inaccurate remark, smearing all healthcare workers, is disgraceful. The Taoiseach knows it is not correct and this is nothing but an attempt to shift onto the workforce the blame for the healthcare crisis caused by the Government's own failures.

"The Taoiseach's comment is also a bit rich coming from a Government that has failed to ensure a new contract for hospital consultants, an elite section of which is allowed to benefit from both the private and public hospital systems to the detriment of public patients. The government promised in 2001 to ensure a new contract to guarantee greater equity for public patients but five years later talks have not even properly begun." ENDS
