Sinn Féin supports rally against Tallaght Hospital closure

14 October, 2006

Speaking ahead of a rally organised by the Tallaght Hospital Action Group for 12.30pm at Tallaght Hospital, local TD and Sinn Féin Social Affairs spokesperson Seán Crowe has expressed his full support for the campaign and urged people to come out and support the protest.

The Dublin South-West TD said: “A couple of months ago Sinn Féin tested the journey times by various forms of public transport and by car from Tallaght to the Mater, where the proposed new children’s hospital is to be. The shortest journey was almost an hour and a half long and for many people on the southside of Dublin it would be even longer.

“Forcing children, the most vulnerable members of our society, to travel such a distance for medical treatment when we have a first class facility available here in Tallaght is nothing short of madness. Whether the new facility should be in Tallaght or in the Mater, there is no case for the closing of a children’s hospital that is serving one of the fastest growing areas of the country, with new developments springing up all over south and west Dublin.

“I am confident there will be a good turnout today at the rally organised by the local Tallaght Hospital campaign to show the opposition of local people to this Government’s plans. But this is only the beginning of a campaign that the people of this area will take forward over the coming months, with the full support of Sinn Féin.”ENDS
