Sinn Féin supports SIPTU's Aer Lingus protest
Workers and union activists from Aer Lingus were joined by Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh, party councillors Larry O’Toole and Daithí Doolan, and a number of Sinn Féin activists, outside Leinster House this morning to support a protest organised by SIPTU against the disastrous privatisation of Aer Lingus.
Speaking at the demonstration, the Dublin South-Central TD said: “It is increasingly obvious that the disaster predicted by the Aer Lingus unions, and those parties like Sinn Féin who opposed the privatisation of the airline, has come to pass.
“Our national airline was sold at a bargain basement price by a Government incapable of developing an all-island air transport strategy and unable to appreciate the importance to an island nation of a strategic asset like Aer Lingus.”
“Minister Cullen should be mature enough, and big enough, to recognise when he has made a mistake. In this case, it is a grievous political error of monumental proportions that will have repercussions for decades. We now need the Government to engage in a process of damage limitation. The simplest way to do this is to maximise the control of the Irish people over Aer Lingus to protect our national interest.”
