Bairbre de Brún to meet with community groups to discuss EU funding concerns
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has this morning held a meeting with Pat Colgan, head of the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUP) to discuss the planned implementation of PEACE III.
This afternoon Ms de Brún will also meet with the Lenadoon Community Forum in West Belfast at their request, to discuss their concerns about the SEUPB's proposals regarding PEACE III funding.
Speaking today Ms de Brún said:
"There is huge concern within the community sector that the potential of the PEACE III programme could be undermined and its focus gradually narrowed. We need an inclusive approach which has equality and sustainable community development at its core.
"The EU, through the PEACE programme, promoted a level of civic engagement, partnership working and respect for grassroots opinion unknown in the North of Ireland until that time. This has contributed greatly to the development of the peace process since then.
"PEACE III has the potential to significantly add to the important work which is taking place right across the community, including tackling discrimination, promoting social inclusion, addressing the legacy of discrimination, building good community relations and promoting national reconciliation. It is essential that this work is allowed to continue in the time ahead." ENDS
