Sinn Féin announce appointment of new Education Spokesperson
Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff has been appointed as the party's new Education Spokesperson for the Six Counties. He replaces former Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Michael Ferguson MLA who passed away earlier this year.
Mr McElduff is also a councillor on Omagh District Councillor and a member of the Western Education Library Board.
Commenting on his appointment Mr McElduff said:
"Michael was a close personal friend and while no-one could replace Michael I hope to build upon the strong foundations laid by both Michael and Martin McGuinness particularly in fighting to safeguard the educational entitlement of our children and fighting against cuts to educational services.
"I will continue to promote vocational training and apprenticeships and in try to make sure that people from disadvantaged and lower income communities are afforded the best opportunities in life, from accessing 'wrap-around' early years support through to challenging the financial barriers that stop people accessing third level education.
"I will also work closely with my Leinster House colleague Sean Crowe TD and bring a particularly focus on the needs of people living in rural communities.
"I will work closely with parents and children and educational representative bodies to ensure that together we address the uncertainties currently facing them." ENDS
