Anger at racist attack in Rostrevor

31 October, 2006

South Down Assembly Member Caitríona Ruane has condemned, in the strongest possible terms, the gang who carried out a violent assault on three foreign nationals in the Newtown Road area of Rostrevor at the weekend.

Ms Ruane said:

"The vast majority of local people in the village have been left shocked and disgusted at what occurred here at the weekend. Indeed, there is a sense of outrage that a gang of local thugs have targeted foreign nationals in what was a violent racist attack.

"Racism, in all its forms, is absolutely reprehensible and I have no doubt the people of Rostrevor will have been abhorred what occurred here. We need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with immigrant workers, who are making a valuable contribution to life here in south Down, and to show that they are welcome in any part of Ireland.

"During last weekend's attack, local people bravely intervened to stop what was happening only to then find themselves targeted by the same gang of thugs. What occurred here in Rostrevor is absolutely unacceptable and I wish to offer by solidarity with the victims and assure them that they have every right to live and work in any part of Ireland."
