Welcome for European Commission Support For Restoration

8 November, 2006

Sinn Féín MEP Bairbre de Brún has welcomed the comments of European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso supporting a speedy restoration of the political institutions and reiterating the Commissions support for the development of the Irish peace process.

Ms deBrún said:

"I welcome the comments of the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso following his meeting with the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern this afternoon urging all of the parties to follow the timetable laid out by the two governments at St. Andrews. Europe has long been a supporter of the peace process in Ireland and this is a welcome intervention at a crucial time.

"The Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle has already stated that we believe the process set out at St. Andrews has the potential to deliver the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement and to bring about the restoration of the power sharing and all-Ireland institutions.

"Serious engagement is now required between the political parties in the run up to the nomination of the First and Deputy First Ministers on November 24th. That work needs to begin now. The governments need to ensure that an early meeting of the postponed Programme for Government Committee is called so that the detailed work required can begin to take place without further delay."
