Sinn Féin meet Cairns over checks and balances for new councils
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the Review of Public Administration, South Belfast MLA Alex Maskey and party General Secretary Mitchel McLaughlin met with British NIO Minister David Cairns today, Monday 13th November, to discuss progress on bringing forward legislation on the checks and balances required for the new local councils.
Speaking after the meeting Mr Maskey said:
"We need to ensure that the legislation for the new councils on the checks and balances required to ensure the effective protection and promotion of the rights of all is able to achieve these objectives. Anything that does not outlaw the behaviour we still see today in terms of the politics of exclusion operated within some unionist councils is simply not acceptable.
"We have an opportunity to ensure that the principles of inclusion and equality become a working reality within the new councils. This requires a clear framework of checks and balances." ENDS
