"Sinn Féin remain opposed to academic selection, particularly at age 11 because branding any child a failure at the age of 11 is wrong and branding the majority of our children as failures at age 11 should be unacceptable within any education system. Academic selection for the minority means academic rejection for the majority.

"Claims that the selective education provides a ladder up for children from disadvantaged backgrounds do not stand up to scrutiny. Not only does a comparison of free school meals expose this as a myth but evidence from areas such as the Shankill Road in Belfast show that this simply is not happening. Far from bridging the social and economic divide, the present arrangements perpetuate it." ENDS
