16 November, 2006

ee early progress on an Irish Language Act.

"There has also been a massive step forward in terms of the responsibility of a new Executive to take forward action on the Irish Language and in tackling poverty.

"There will now be a duty on the Executive to enhance and protect the development of the Irish language to match a new Irish Language Act; and also a duty on the Executive to adopt a strategy to tackle poverty and social exclusion based on objective need. This must mean directing resources to areas and communities in need and tackling inequality and discrimination. This represents huge progress because there have been serious reservations about attempts by the NIO and senior civil servants to bypass the objective need criteria." ENDS
