"Harney quick to open private facilities but not to hold them to account" - Ó Caoláin
Commenting on the revelation that one of the nursing homes to which admissions have been suspended was opened only last year by the Minister for Health, Mary Harney, the Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:
“Health Minister Harney and her predecessors have been quick to attend the openings of private nursing homes and other private healthcare facilities but not to hold them to account. The Leas Cross scandal exposed the shambles that is our inspection system for nursing homes. Only now are serious efforts being made to rectify that situation. We have a legacy of badly run nursing homes not being properly held to account while those many nursing homes who provide high quality care are being tarred with the same brush.
“Confusion is being caused by the non-availability of all inspection reports from the Health Information and Quality Authority. All these reports should be made available to the public promptly. Total openness and transparency is essential to ensure the health and safety of residents of all nursing homes.”
