Ferris voices support for new fishing organisation
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD has voiced his support for the newly formed Federation of Irish Fishermen and called upon the Taoiseach to meet with the group.
Speaking today Deputy Ferris said, "The amalgamation of the existing groups is to be welcomed. It is also a token of the seriousness of the situation that faces Irish fishermen and coastal communities at the moment. This year has seen a number of major blows at the sector including the punitive new fishing legislation and the banning of drift net salmon fishing.
"There is also the need for a coherent response to the EU's proposal to review the Common Fisheries Policy as this has been disastrous for the Irish fisheries. Change will require a united front across the sector and the support of Government to ensure that radical changes are brought about to save the sector from destruction. Unfortunately, the actions of successive Irish Governments would not generate any confidence as they have been only too willing to co-operate with what is clearly a long term EU strategy designed to ultimately destroy the Irish fishing industry."
