Crowe to lead mass registration drive in Tallaght this weekend
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe will lead a mass registration drive in Tallaght West this weekend. Deputy Crowe has taken this extraordinary measure because the South Dublin County Council electoral register is in chaos following the mass removal of eligible voters. Deputy Crowe said "More than 6,500 people have been removed from the election register in Tallaght West, but with just over a week to go the local Council has still not put in place a proper plan to get people back on the register. This weekend community workers will join Sinn Féin activists in going door to door across the constituency in order to ensure that the register is as accurate as possible."
Deputy Crowe said, "More than 6,500 people have been removed from the electoral register in Tallaght West and despite the fact that road after road in estates across the area were removed almost en bloc from the register, no alarm bells went off in the franchise section of the council. For example in Cushlawn, where there are 600 houses, 750 people have been removed from the register. In Jobstown, where there are 3,000 houses, 1,700 people have been removed. These people, who desperately need to ensure their voices are heard, are being effectively disenfranchised by the Council.
"It is clear that there is a major problem here and no serious effort is being made to ensure people are on the register. One of the most ludicrous aspects of the fiasco is that the vast majority of those removed are tenants of South Dublin County Council and are paying rent each week.
"Having made a complete mess of the registration drive the Council then refused to provide local politicians with the necessary information detailing those deleted from the register. Minister Roche had to go to the extraordinary length of amending the law to force the Council to provide information that was made public in other councils weeks ago.
"South Dublin County Council seems to have its head in the sand about this issue. They didn't seek an extension of the timeframe from the Minister and despite getting additional resources they have yet to put in place any detailed plan to go back into areas that have been removed from the register as a result of their ineptitude.
"This weekend community workers will join Sinn Féin activists to undertake a mass registration drive across Tallaght West. But there is only so much we can do. With just over a week left to go the Council needs to start doing it's job and go door to door to ensure that everyone entitled to vote is on the election register." ENDS
