Ó Caoláin calls on Government TDs to show where they stand on Monaghan Hospital
Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has challenged Fianna Fáil TDs to show ‘whether they stand with the people of Monaghan, or whether they stand with Mary Harney, Brendan Drumm and the faceless bureaucrats of the HSE’. He was speaking ahead of a mass demonstration at Leinster House this afternoon, called by the Monaghan Community Alliance in support of the elected members of Monaghan County Council who had earlier taken the decision to mount an all-party picket on the Dáil today. The protest is in opposition to the proposed further downgrading of Monaghan Hospital.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD said: “`The mobilisation organised by the Monaghan Community Alliance, and the hundreds of people we expect to see take part in it, is a further warning to this Government that the people of Monaghan and the entire border region, are adamant that Monaghan Hospital will not be further downgraded and ultimately closed.
“Buses have been organised by local organisations in a mobilisation of all shades of political opinion and all walks of life. There seems to be no appreciation, and indeed little interest, at senior level in Government and the HSE in the depths of public anger that exists in Monaghan.
“The accusation by HSE Chief Executive Brendan Drumm that those people campaigning for the retention of services of ‘scare-mongering for self-interest’ shows the contempt in which Minister Harney and the HSE hold the people of Monaghan.
“I hope that Government TDs and councillors will be with us today, clearly demonstrating whether they stand with the people of Monaghan, or whether they stand with Mary Harney, Brendan Drumm and the faceless bureaucrats of the HSE.”
