Sinn Féin welcomes publication of Farm Performance Indicators

5 December, 2006

Sinn Fein Agriculture Spokesperson, Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew MLA has said that the publication of Farm Performance Indicators is useful as it allows farmers to get a real sense of their variable and fixed costs and therefore a margin before the Single Farm Payment and other subsidies are taken into account.

Ms Gildernew said:

"This is useful exercise and clearly benchmarking across farm types and size allows farmers to make informed choices and policy makers to understand where to target supports.

"It is particularly useful for farmers to get a sense of their variable and fixed costs and therefore a margin before the Single Farm Payment and other subsidies are taken into account.

"This information should also enable farmers to look at where cost savings can be made and efficiencies increased. It often means attention to detail rather than increased expenditure.

"What is becoming more evident is that the scale of farming is dictating larger margins, particularly in Dairy farming. Fixed costs are almost comparable across herd size, with larger herds gaining additional margins. It is this Dairy sector that needs support in developing new product lines and new markets to increase the farm gate milk price." ENDS
