Ballymena DUP Mayor to consider reception for Clooney Hurlers

4 December, 2006

Ballymena Sinn Féin Councillor, Monica Digney, has proposed that the North Antrim Council hold a reception for local hurling team Clooney Gaels who won their first ever Ulster Junior Hurling Championship last month. Cllr Digney raised the issue at the start of last night's (Monday) Council meeting. The DUP Mayor of Ballymena said that the issue would be considered and has not ruled out holding a Mayoral reception for the Ahoghill side.   Cllr Digney said:   "Clooney Gaels' historic win over Strabane in last month's Ulster Final was truly momentous and is yet another example of the rich and talented hurling stock we have here in North Antrim.   "I think it is only right that Ballymena Council recognise this fantastic sporting achievement, especially when you consider that the club have only just won their first County Junior Championship in 17 years.   "I wish the Gaels all the best in the All-Ireland semi-final and hope to see them bring more silverware back to Clooney in the near future."
