Sinn Féin backs Submarine Bar workers

8 December, 2006

Sinn Féin Worker's Rights spokesperson Deputy Arthur Morgan TD, and local party TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh today expressed their support for the bar workers in the well-known Dublin pub The Submarine Bar who have gone on strike following management's attempts to introduce cheap labour, undermining the pay and conditions of existing workers.

Deputy Morgan said: "These are unionised employees some of who have up to 18 years experience in the bar trade. Ten workers are picketing the bar and are supported by their union Mandate. The workers decided to take strike action after three of the staff were let go. This has come as a result of a managerial cost-cutting exercise; they want to get rid of experienced unionised staff members and replace them with cheap labour. The owner of the Submarine has told existing staff that if they wish to continue working in the bar they will have to re-apply for their own jobs and with a radical change in their working hours and conditions of employment.

"This was a bar bought as a going concern in May for €12million and it is quite clear that there is money to be made from it. Sinn Féin is calling on the Submarine's owner, to ensure that the staff members who wish to stay are guaranteed their original terms and working conditions. For those employees that wish to avail of redundancy, they should be offered a fair package that adequately reflects their length of service and the obvious loyalty that built up the business."

Deputy O'Snodaigh said: "It is an absolute scandal that workers who have given 18 years service to a business are forced to strike three weeks before Christmas. The Submarine is one of the most well known and profitable businesses in the capital, and bar management have shown complete disregard to existing staff in an effort to follow the trend of pushing out staff and taking on cheaper labour to cut costs and line their own pockets.

"It is a fact that lower paid staff are more vulnerable to exploitation and it is quite worrying that a publican such as Gary Smith feels the need to make staff redundant despite the evident profits in the bar. Sinn Féin supports these workers and trade union members who have embarked on strike action and would call on everyone in the Crumlin area to follow suit. We would also call on regulars and customers of the Submarine to support the picket line."
