Sinn Féin welcome for Bill of Rights announcement

12 December, 2006

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Human Rights Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the announcement from the British government that they are to convene the roundtable meeting on a Bill of Rights. Ms Ruane said that a Bill of Rights is a key demand of the Good Friday Agreement and that Sinn Féin had been pressing for the convening of this meeting in recent negotiations with the British government.

Ms Ruane said:

"Eight years on from the signing of the Good Friday Agreement it is completely unacceptable that so little progress has been made formulating a Bill of Rights, a key demand of the Agreement.

"Sinn Féin have been demanding publicly and privately in our discussions with the British government that a roundtable meeting for the purpose of developing a Bill of Rights be convened.

"It is welcome that the British government have now announced their intention to convene this meeting next Monday. It is now vital that the independent chair and funded secretariat is appointed and the work needed to formulate an effective Bill of Rights be quickly completed without any further delays." ENDS
