HSE €100 million on consultants shows total lack of accountability – Ó Caoláin

8 January, 2007

Commenting on the revelation that the Health Service Executive is to spend €100 million to pay consultants to advise it on financial management, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:

"This massive spend by the HSE for consultancy services is excessive and is a further waste of resources in the wake of the PPARS debacle. €100 million of public money is not actually going to provide any front-line health services but into the pockets of consultancy firms to provide reports and other services to the HSE bureaucracy. Does the HSE itself not have the expertise among its staff members to do this work?

"Since the Fianna Fáil/PD Government set up the Health Service Executive there has been a total lack of political accountability for our health services. Dáil Questions to Health Minister Mary Harney are referred to the HSE and TDs must wait weeks and sometimes months for replies. Mary Harney is hiding behind the HSE, claiming credit for positive news about the health services and dodging the bad news." ENDS
