Cllr. Jonathan O Brien To Be Sinn Féin Candidate for Cork North Central
The Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle last Saturday unanimously supported the nomination of Cork City Councillor Jonathan O Brien as the Sinn Féin Candidate for Cork North Central in the forthcoming general election. Jonathan O Brien had previously expressed doubt about his ability to fill the role.
Jonathan O Brien said: "Last autumn I informed the party that I might not be able to give 100% commitment to my role as candidate for Cork North Central in the forthcoming general election due to personal issues. I asked the party to consider other possible candidates for the role. My commitment to Cork North Central remained undiminished and I continued my work as a City Councillor.
"The party, while putting in place the mechanisms to find a replacement, agreed to give me some time to consider my position. The personal issues have since been resolved and I informed the Sinn Féin leadership that I am now in a position to give 100% commitment to my role as a candidate.
"I am humbled by the support given to me by the Sinn Féin Ard Comhairle, but in particular I would like to thank all those Cork people, inside and outside the party, who encouraged me to remain as a candidate and offered me support to do so.
"Sinn Féin is now putting together an election team and I look forward to working with them to take a seat in the Cork North Central constituency. Cork North Central demands and deserves a radical voice who can articulate the many needs of the constituency. I believe Sinn Féin can provide that voice." ENDS
