Óráid ar Uachtaránacht Ghearmánach an AE

17 January, 2007

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún, speaking in Irish in the first parliamentary session since Irish was given official recognition, in the key debate on the German Presidency has voiced concern that the 'German EU Presidency aims to place such a major focus on efforts to revive the EU Constitution'.

Speaking in the EU Parliament today, Ms de Brún said:

"Tá lúcháir orm go n-aithnítear mo theanga féin, an Ghaeilge anois mar theanga oifigiúil agus oibre den Aontais. Is mar gheall ar obair chrua agus ar bhrú feachtais ag gníomhaithe na Gaeilge sa bhaile san fheachtas Stádas a tugadh stádas oifigiúil agus oibre don Ghaeilge. Molaim a gcuid iarrachtaí.

"Is oth liom a rá go bhfuil srianta go fóill ar an mhéid gur féidir a dhéanamh trí mheáin na Gaeilge agus leanfaidh mé féin agus mo chomhghleacaithe linn in GUE/NGL brú a chur ar mhaithe le comhionannas iomlán do chainteoirí Gaeilge i ngach gné dá gcuid oibre i bParlaimint na hEorpa.

"Ó thaobh Uachtarántacht na Gearmáine de, tá mé buartha go bhfuil sé de rún acu béim chomh mór sin a chur ar iarrachtaí chun Bunreacht na hEorpa a athbheochan, ag léiriú neamhaird suntasach i dtaca le toil thoghthóirí na Fraince agus na hOllainne a léiríodh go daonlathach.

"B'fhearr i bhfad don Uachtaránacht díriú ar dhul i ngleic le bochtaineacht, ar neamhionannas agus ar chiníochas; ag saothrú in éadan príobháidithe agus ag daingniú Eoraip Shóisialta; ag iarraidh saoirsí sibhialta, cearta daonna, trádáil chóir a chosaint agus ag dul i ngleic le éagothromaíochtaí domhanda. Ba é an cuspóir a bheadh leis fosta ná dul i ngleic le riachtanais agus cúiseanna imirceach neamhrialta agus le réiteach coinbhleachta a chur chun cinn laistigh den AE agus níos faide anonn.

"Spreagfainn an Uachtaránacht nua le héisteacht le guthanna na saoránach fud fad na mBallstát agus freagairt dá réir sin le clár oibre atá níos dírithe ar dhaoine a bhfuil ceartas sóisialta agus eacnamaíoch agus comhionannas polaitiúil agus cultúrtha ag a chroí." CRÍOCH

Speech on German Presidency of EU (English translation)

"As an Irish speaker I am delighted that my own language is now officially recognized as an official and a working language of the EU. This is due to much hard work and campaigning by Irish language activists at home in the STÁDAS campaign, whose efforts I commend.

"It is a matter of regret; however, that there are restrictions on what can be done through Irish at present. I and my colleagues in GUE/NGL will continue to press for full equality for Irish speakers in all aspects of their work of the European Parliament.

"I am concerned that the German EU Presidency aims to place such a major focus on efforts to revive the EU Constitution, displaying a significant disregard for the democratically expressed will of the French and Dutch electorates.

"I would ask the incoming Presidency to focus on tackling poverty, inequality and racism; working against privatisation and strengthening Social Europe; protecting civil liberties, human rights, fair trade and combating global inequalities.

"It would better to turn its attention to the needs and causes of irregular migrants and to promoting conflict resolution within the EU and further afield.

"I would urge the incoming Presidency to listen to the voices of citizens across the Member States and respond accordingly with a more people centred agenda with social and economic justice and political and cultural equality at its heart." ENDS
