Network 3 Abolish Roaming Charges

17 January, 2007

Sinn Féin MLA Mitchel McLaughlin has welcomed the news that Mobile Phone Company Network Three have abolished roaming charges in several countries across Europe.

Mr McLaughlin said,

"The announcement by mobile phone company Network Three that they are to abolish roaming charges is welcome news indeed. Sinn Féin has campaigned to have these charges abolished and with one company now taking the leap to end them I hope that the other mobile phone companies will follow suit.

"These charges have been levied on users for use of their mobile phones in different countries and in Ireland there was a levy for roaming between the North and the South. This particularly was unfair in border areas where mobile phones would pick up a stronger signal even if it was from across the border and therefore the user would be charged at premium rates.

"O2 Ireland has already abolished roaming charges in the South of Ireland and with Network Three joining with in abolishing these unfair charges there is no reason to prevent all other mobile phone companies doing the same and Sinn Féin will continue to raise this issue until it is fully resolved."
