McDonald report on ship-workers rights adopted in European Parliament
The Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament today adopted a report by Mary Lou McDonald MEP on the rights of ship-workers. The report, which paves the way for EU member states to adopt the ILO Maritime Labour Convention, introduces improved working and living conditions for seafarers and a strong enforcement regime.
Speaking in Brussels Ms McDonald said:
"The Irish Ferries dispute shows that the maritime sector is in dire need of regulation and that workers in the sector need to be protected.
"The EU should send a strong signal to the rest of the world in relation to labour standards by ratifying this convention.
"The Maritime Labour Convention was 5 years in negotiation and was adopted almost unanimously by ship-owners, transport unions and governments. The Irish government should speedily ratify the ILO Convention as a first step towards ensuring that the Irish Ferries debacle can never be repeated."
