Morgan to raise Motorola closure in Dáil with Minister Martin

30 January, 2007

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Enterprise, Trade and Employment Arthur Morgan TD, speaking following the announcement by Motorola of the potential loss of 350 at its plant in Mahon in Cork City, said that this news was a further reminder of the risks inherent in over reliance on multinationals and foreign direct investment. He said he would be raising the matter with Minister Mícheal Martin tomorrow during questions to the Minister.

The Louth TD said: “This is a time of great concern for the 350 workers at the Motorola plant in Mahon. For the workers and there families I hope that everything possible is done to ensure that these jobs are not lost. If the jobs are lost then achieving the best possible redundancy package for the workers must be the primary objective.

“The Motorola case is particularly worrying because these are high tech software development jobs and not the loss of jobs in the traditional manufacturing sector which we have become depressingly accustomed to. However it is part of the same phenomenon and it too is an inevitable consequence of the high reliance on multinationals and foreign direct investment.

“Sinn Féin has long argued that we must reduce our vulnerability to such developments by reducing our reliance on FDI and developing the indigenous enterprise sector. We have called for a policy shift so that the supports and grant aid from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment be primarily directed at the development of indigenous micro, and small and medium enterprise enterprises, and at the development of social economy enterprises. The situation that has developed at Motorola further reaffirms to need for such a shift.

“Tomorrow in the Dáil I will be questioning the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment on what he is doing about this drip, drip of job losses, particularly amongst multinationals. I will be asking him if he will initiate an assessment of sectors and geographic regions likely to experience job losses in the next five years. I will also be demanding, as I have done previously, that specific funding be put in place to up skill and re-train vulnerable workers in advance of the likely job losses. I will also raise the issue of the imminent job loses at Motorola with him.”
